How Schools and Universities Use Facebook?
This is a Facebook-ruled era. It’s undeniable. We hear people talk about liking events and fan pages. private messaging friends and commenting to videos and images all posted in Facebook. Most of these people are aged 18 to 35 years-old and are students who are ideal prospects for schools and universities. It’s no wonder why schools and universities are finding their way to be Facebook literate and be merged in this era.

Universities like Johns Hopkins and Harvard (where Mark Zuclerberg, the founder of Facebook, was from) have their own pages where they can post events, videos and blogs for their already attending and prospective students, as well as alumni. Some universities started small, they tried creating official Facebook pages for their students first. When the Facebook Groups application was launched, they created groups for their different departments and classes. Then when an even bigger app like the Facebook Fanpage was introduced, they made Fanpages. Students who want to go or apply for any university can “like” the Facebook fanpage of the said university and in return will be updated with events and activities of the said university.
The good thing about this according to Mike Richwalsky of Allegheny College in the US is that creating Facebook groups and fan pages is free. The schools and universities are operating at a minimum cost in Facebook but are gaining more. Events like employment fairs and recruitment maybe posted in their school’s pages in order to reach out to the majority of their students. Facebook is quite an easy way to put across information for their students.
In retrospect, 80 percent of the said schools and universities that manage Facebook pages admit to using the network in checking out new school applicants Facebook profiles. They said they don’t neccessarily base their admission on the profile of the said applicant as there are many other factors they still consider in accepting students in their schools , but they stated that what a prospect student post or say in his Facebook wall predisposes his application to their school. So basically, applicants can turn this into an advantage by being visible in the pages of the universities they want to get into. They can “like” the pages of the said schools, or they can use their Facebook profile to showcase their talents and skills by posting videos of themselves and the likes.
With Facebook, both the schools and the students have found a way to create a win-win situation. It’s no longer just a media for finding long lost friends or keeping in touch with relatives it has become far more greater than that. Facebook is steadily looking for ways to make itself a total social media by allowing communication within friends, relatives, businesses, politics, religion and now schools and universites. There will be more of Facebook to come, it’s undeniable.
